ABOUT THE GALLERY
Welcome to the photographic world of Pat Brownlie. The galleries available for view on this site are a selection of my work. I have been playing with the effect of light and color in photography for over twenty-five years.
All of my work begins with a photograph taken with either a standard SLR camera or a digital SLR camera. The photograph is then transferred into a computer and transformed in some fashion.
Some of my work depicts fully representational photography where the image displays a recognizable object or scene - pretty much what the camera and the eye see. For photographs such as these, I have been able to capture a particular time/space/light moment that truly reveals what I want someone else to see. For these types of photographs, I use the computer only to crop the photo for balance or to emphasize the perspective, "clean" the photo to eliminate unwanted objects or blemishes, and adjust color as needed.
However, perhaps because of my long career in information technology, I have become more and more interested and involved in what I have come to call transformational photography. A transformational photograph always begins with one or more representational photographs. A transformational photograph can come about from merging parts or all of multiple photographs into one so that the final image still retains recognizable pieces of the originals. A transformational photograph can also result from manipulation of a representational photograph with one or more filters that change the character or nature of the original to form a new image. Finally, a transformational photograph can result from transforming one or more photographs into a completely different image with little or no resemblance to the original photograph or photographs used in making it, essentially a mutation from one form into another.
All of the photographs are offered for sale from this site in an unmatted, unframed 8 x 10 glossy format. Other sizes with different finishes (matte, archival matte, luster) and framed photographs can be made available on request. See the Custom menu option for more details.
